The outbreak of a COVID Pandemic has paradoxically brought a lot of trouble to our local economy, but it's also brought opportunity.
The importance of social media in our lives as exhibit itself like never before. It is a major way that people could stay in touch with each other in times of crisis. Well groups gathering and close interactions are slowly getting back to normal, Kona residents and visitors are spending more time than usual in their vehicles; with their fingers on their video buttons. Yes, we are witnessing the rebirth of the radio.
Almost 6 years ago, With the directors embarked upon establishing Kona LPFM radio, Broadcast from Kona. The idea was that Kailua Kona finally have a real public radio presents. One that was not simply another basement operation of privileged people playing their favorite mixtapes, but a truly people oriented, non profit public station. One that is not a mirror of HPR, But one that involved it self in the world in the real lives of real people, here in this town and its environs. By the grace of the universe and some financial help, we launched KONA LPFM 100.5 in August 2015.
What we have done since then is almost unheard of in public radio circles. We've not only produced some world-class music shows of many different varieties, we debuted our self as a font of news, human interest stories and other interesting licensing content that highlights the best of what Hawai'i. has to offer: advanced food sustainability, greener renewable energy forms, the power and meaning of Aloha. Our story/human interest content takes issues head on, unafraid. It doesn't play favorites, and gives a voice to Kailua-Konans who want to be heard on it. It gains applause, it engenders outrage and controversy. But one thing it never gets, is ignored. We don't consider our job done until as many residents of Kailua Kona who have the desire, are heard.
Which brings us to the current, and our next great point of growth. After a few years of operating as a near cottage industry radio operation, out of a home in Kona Palisades with a single antenna and transmission equipment in a tiny room on premises, we have to break out. We need to become the public station that had always been planned, and incremental growth in not doing the trick. We have some equipment that needs upgrading, and most importantly - we now need a dedicated facility for the technical and public needs of the station. A facility, a proper studio, that allows for guest interviews in a safe and comfortable environment. We believe this is where the generous, aware and engaged members of Kailua Kona's business environment come in.
Through generous donations - well we actually consider them investments in the community - we truly believe that KONA LPFM 100.5 will become the fully functional, seamless operation we always intended it to be.
To podium of thought, humor, enlightenment and entertainment. The Voice of Kona.
